Nema 23 Planetary Gearbox

A NEMA 23 planetary gearbox mounts to NEMA 23 stepper motors and uses a sun-and-planet gear set to provide reduction. The selected ratio lowers output speed and multiplies torque at the shaft (within gearbox efficiency and rated limits). It is commonly used where a compact drive layout is needed for positioning and motion control.

Why it’s used

Planetary gearheads distribute load across multiple gear contacts in a small housing, which helps in space-limited builds. Final motion results still depend on backlash grade, load inertia, alignment, lubrication, and duty cycle—so sizing from the datasheet matters.

What to check before choosing

Confirm reduction ratio, rated output torque (continuous/peak), backlash, shaft style, mounting pattern, and allowable radial/axial loads. Also review operating temperature range, lubricant type, and the intended duty cycle. Use the manufacturer’s drawing and model table to verify fit and ratings for the exact part number.

Typical applications

Used in automation axes, small CNC mechanisms, robotics/actuators, 3D‑printer drives, and compact positioning fixtures where speed reduction and torque multiplication are required.
