Hollow Rotary Actuators Guide

If you've ever tried to route cables or air lines through a rotating axis, you know how messy it can get. A hollow rotary actuator solves that by giving you a clean pass-through right in the middle of the shaft. Think of it as a rotating platform with a hole—wires, tubing, or even laser beams go through the center while the outer part does the spinning.

Inside, hollow rotating rlatform is a mix of motor power and precision gears (harmonic or planetary, depending on what you need). The hollow shaft sits on integrated bearings, so it can handle both rotation and the stuff passing through it. You can pair it with a stepper or servo motor—choice depends on how much torque and how tight your positioning needs to be.

People use these things where a rotary axis has to move while something else runs through it. Semiconductor wafer handlers, inspection stages, robot arms, tool changers—basically, if you need rotation and cabling in the same space, this is the shortcut.

The layout itself buys you two things: less wrestling with cable loops, and a cleaner machine footprint. Fewer dangling wires interfere with rotation. Performance-wise, torque delivery and positioning repeatability come down to the gear type, the motor you bolt on, and how well the whole thing is put together.

Before you pick one hollow rotary actuator, run through the basics: torque (both holding and moving), load it has to carry, how precise the angle needs to be, what kind of gearing fits your speed range, and the shaft diameter that matches your pass-through. Check that the motor mounting matches your driver, and don’t forget the boring stuff—lube type, dust or splash protection, and which way it'll be mounted. The datasheet tells the real story; read it before you order.
