Worm Gearbox Selection (Quick Guide)

A worm gearbox reducer is a compact right-angle drive used to lower speed and increase output torque. Actual output depends on the selected ratio, load, and the efficiency of the specific model.

When to use this type

Choose a worm gear speed reducer when you need a 90° layout, limited installation space, and low-speed output (common in conveyors, small indexing drives, packaging equipment, and adjustment mechanisms).

What to confirm before you buy

  • Target output RPM: Output speed is typically motor RPM divided by the reducer ratio (use the nearest available standard ratio for the series).
  • Required torque (and peaks): Check both continuous torque and short peak loads from starts/stops or occasional jams.
  • Duty cycle: Hours per day, frequent reversing, and repeated starts can raise temperature and wear—size accordingly.
  • Mounting and shafts: Verify the exact input interface (motor flange or input shaft) and output style (solid/hollow), plus shaft diameter and key/locking method.
  • Environment: Temperature, dust/water exposure, and required sealing level should match the product's published specs.

Operating Precautions

  • Self-locking is not automatic. Back-driving resistance varies by ratio, lubrication, and operating conditions. For loads that must be held securely, use a brake or a dedicated holding device.
  • Lubrication depends on the model and mounting position. Fill level and service method can change with orientation—follow the manufacturer instructions for the exact unit.
