Switching Power Supply
A CNC switching power supply converts AC mains input into regulated DC output for motion controllers, motor drives, and I/O systems. Common output voltages include 12V, 24V, 36V, and 48V, selected according to driver and motor requirements. Typical functions may include over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature protection, soft-start control, and input EMI filtering. These power supplies are used in CNC machines and related automation equipment where DC rails are required.
Internally, the unit rectifies AC input to high-voltage DC, then uses high-frequency switching devices such as MOSFETs or IGBTs to regulate the output through transformer isolation and feedback control. Output regulation is achieved by adjusting duty cycle within a PWM or resonant control circuit. Similar switching architectures are used across different voltage variants, depending on required DC rail levels.
When selecting a CNC power supply for stepper motors or servo motors, confirm output voltage (12V/24V/36V/48V), continuous and peak current capacity, ripple specification, inrush current, and hold-up time. Consider load characteristics, as stepper drives draw pulsed current and some servo systems may return energy during deceleration. Environmental conditions, cooling method (fan or convection), EMC compliance, grounding, and terminal configuration should also match the cabinet layout.
